Clinical recyclables are primarily comprised of clean and dry packaging, made from virgin materials, generated in a controlled setting prior to a highly technical procedure. These materials are an excellent source of valuable recyclables. The HPRC Pilot Study at Stanford Health Care provided a comprehensive guide to plastics generated in clinical settings by material type and volume, mapped materials flow through the hospital, and established best practices for quality and efficient materials sorting and collection. The clinical recycling model was used as a roadmap to expand recycling collection throughout all clinical areas across the medical campus.
